About Us - Phil Sorbet, Vice President and General Manager California Operations
Phillip E. Sorbet – a Petroleum Engineering graduate of Louisiana State University is Vice President and General Manager of Nations Petroleum (California) LLC and has worked in the oil and gas industry for over 25 years. During that time he has held senior management positions within mid sized independent oil companies based in the U.S. Mr. Sorbet’s career began with Placid Oil Company where he held operational and management positions within the Gulf Coast Offshore Region. He led Placid’s operational team in installing and commissioning the first floating production facility in the Gulf of Mexico, Green Canyon Block 29. He joined Torch Operating Company in 1991 after Torch completed an acquisition of Placid’s offshore Gulf of Mexico assets and managed these offshore assets for 3 years. In 1994 he was a key member of the team that acquired Unocal’s Pt. Pedernales Field, offshore California. Mr. Sorbet was moved to California to startup these operations hiring and developing a staff of over 40. The successes of the Pt. Pedernales acquisition lead to the $550 million acquisition of the remainder of Unocal’s California Assets in 1996. Mr. Sorbet ran all of the coastal properties for this acquisition for 2 years. In 1998, Mr. Sorbet was hired by Nuevo Energy Company to manage all aspects of their California activities. He was responsible for 90% of the company’s assets from more than 20 producing fields. He also acquired an additional $100 million in producing properties adjacent to Nuevo’s existing California asset. He served as company spokesperson and issues manager on all California regulatory and political issues and served as a board member on several joint agency groups until the merger of Nuevo by Plains Exploration Company in 2004. In 2004, Mr. Sorbet became a Founder and Limited Partner of Orion California LP, a private Exploration Company funded to perform 145 square mile 3D seismic survey on the South Belridge Field, California with the goal of drilling mid range depth hydrocarbon prospects below the current shallow heavy oil production. Orion is a 40% partner in this exploration partnership with Aera Energy LLC (joint venture between ExxonMobil & Shell).
